Walking In The Wind

I’ve realized a few things since coming home from college for the first time since August: I am still hopelessly in love with One Direction (see exhibits A, B, C, etc.); I have completely adjusted to 60˚ LA days, so coming back to 38˚ weather and NYC winds straight out of JFK was far from fun; and I really like this pair of jeans, which I used to banish to the bottom of my denim pile in my closet, and have worn them more in the past few days home than I have all year. Also, as clearly seen in this post, I struggle with looking at the camera. I guess my shoes are much more interesting than the new patch on my camera.

Today my family had our second of three Christmas celebration at my grandma’s house. There is a gorgeous area of land behind her house, including two ponds and a possible beaver?! Shoutout to Kathryn for exploring with me through the cold and windy weather to make this post happen. You rock, never change. As much as I’m excited to have 60˚ weather again in a few days (thanks El Niño), it’s a bit sad knowing I definitely will not have a white Christmas.

As I’ve been walking in the wind since I’ve gotten home, “T-Shirt Weather” has been playing on repeat. Such a tune.

Kiis 102.7 Jingle Ball

IMG_7303

imagesStaples Center, Jingle Ball

When I found out Jingle Ball in Los Angeles was two stops away on the metro and One Direction an incredible mix of people were performing I knew I had to go. Of course I tried the whole call-the-radio-station-every-day-trying-to-win-free-tickets thing and failed (except I was caller 82 once!!), so I ended up with StubHub tickets which got me two seats in the very last row of the entire theater.IMG_7234

5SOS opened up the show and did not disappoint. The minute Michael began the opening riff of Amnesia I flashed back to the last time I saw them live. They sang a few old songs and a few off their new album, and overall they were a great start to the show.  12342339_960951477311329_9105859402304023521_n

In all honesty, I was there to see One Direction (which really shouldn’t surprise you at this point). The Kiis 102.7 crew made it very clear throughout the night that this was One Direction’s last performance in the US before their two year break *cue the tears* *yes, real tears* *ask Brooke*. The 23 minute set was perfect – and yes they sang “Perfect”. I was most excited about hearing their new songs live. I’ve heard “What Makes You Beautiful” live about 9 times now, so while it still strums on my heart strings the real feels came when they sang “History”, “Drag Me Down” and “Infinity”. It was one of my favorite One Direction concerts yet, and I’m not sure if it’s because it was in such a big arena and everyone was singing along or because it was a huge milestone in their careers. Regardless it was #WorthIt. 12294617_960951470644663_8100212345225230794_n

Other performers included Shawn Mendes, who brought out special guest Camila Cabello, Hailee Steinfeld, Zedd, Selena Gomez and DNCE. I was pleasantly surprised by Hailee Steinfeld and Zedd’s performances. I was not expecting much from Zedd but his set was a mix of his own songs and live mixing of other top 40 hits. His set was the most fun I’ve had at a concert in a long time, and that’s saying something. Hailee Steinfeld only sang two songs but she is an incredibly talented singer. I was impressed. DNCE was absolutely wild, which I was expecting. Joe Jonas ran through the crowd for the entirety of a song and I have never seen a performer jump up and down more than his guitarist did.

Overall, Jingle Ball was Unknown. Next winter I highly recommend going to the nearest Jingle Ball to you. The concerts are exhausting (it was like 4 hours long!!) but you get to see so many incredible acts in one night and it’s super fun– right Brooke!?!

Made In The A.M.

If the fact that I am still obsessed with One Direction is a surprise to you, do you even know me? No. The answer to that is no. Made In The A.M. came out today and of course I’ve been listening to it all day, so here’s the low down on every song on the Deluxe album.

madeintheam

“Hey Angel” – A good opener for the album – it’s kind of trance-y, like there’s a lot of oOoooOoOo’s and big harmonies and a slow drum beat in the background, but the lyrics are a bit too repetitive for my liking. 6.5/10.

“Drag Me Down” / “Perfect” – If you haven’t heard these songs where have you been. They’re both more mature from their past songs and have different (good) vibes. 7.5/10 / 8.5/10.

“Perfect” – Again, if you haven’t heard this song where have you been. It’s more mature and definitely not geared towards the 13 year old crowd their previous albums have been marketed to. Good stuff. 8.5/10.

“Infinity” – Like “Hey Angel”, this song is trance-like until you get to the chorus, which is more raw. It’s quite a sad song but I really like it. Favorite lyric: “How many nights does it take to count the stars? / That’s the time it would take to fix my heart”. 8/10.

“End Of The Day” – I absolutely love the opening of this song, but the chorus is too different beat wise and lyric wise from the other verses that it bothers me quite a bit. Favorite lyric: “I told her that I loved her, was not sure if she heard / The roof was pretty windy and she didn’t say a word”. Also “Just me, her and the moon”. 6.5/10.

“If I Could Fly” – This one made me cry. It may have been the late hour at which I first heard it, or maybe the strings, or the harmonies, or the lyrics, or the speed, or everything. Favorite lyric: “Pay attention, I hope that you listen cause I let my guard down”. 10/10.

“Long Way Down” – Also super obsessed with this one. The lyrics are incredible and very creative, and it’s paired with raspy Harry and acoustic guitar and I love it. Favorite lyric: “We found an island / But we got stranded”. 9.8/10.

“Never Enough” – This song starts off sounding like a cappella and I love it. It also weirdly makes me think of people in a rainforest, living a tribal life of some kind … i don’t know, just listen. 9/10.

“Olivia” Unbelievably catchy (even Brooke says so!!!) and it reminds me of Take Me Home One Direction (tbt to “Rock Me”). Also a great shower/elevator song, just ask the people on my floor… 10/10.

“What A Feeling” – Lots of harmonies and the beat is (surprise!) catchy. 8/10.

“Love You Goodbye” – Seriously so heartfelt – a really sad breakup ballad and it strums on my heart strings. 9.5/10.

“I Want To Write You A Song” – The only word I can think of to describe this is cute – it reminds me of something a high school boyfriend would write his girlfriend, cute guitar plucking and everything. Gotta love it. 9.5/10.

“History” – Hands down my favorite song – I’m a sucker for clapping in unison. Favorite lyric: “No they don’t teach you this in school / Now my hearts breaking and I don’t know what to do“. Overall the lyrics are a bit repetitive, which is why it’s a 9.9999/10.

“Temporary Fix” – Definitely a more mature song (and definitely not for teeny bopper fans). Reminds me of a 90’s band and I love it. 9/10.

“Walking In The Wind” – One of my favorites – it has incredible lyrics and a guitar riff that will forever be stuck in my head. It’s incredibly heartbreaking, though. Favorite lyric: “If you’re lost, just look for me / You’ll find me in the region of the summer stars”. 10/10.

“Wolves” – This song has these wolf-ish sounding OooOOoOoO’s but it’s tasteful and not totally overwhelming and there are also a lot of harmonies and it’s just great. 8.5/10.

“A.M.” – FIRST THINGS FIRST – THEY CURSE IN THIS SONG! I was honestly shocked when I heard this for the first time, but I feel like this song really sums up this album for the boys. They are turning a new leaf – one without Zayn, with a new audience in mind, and new and raw life experiences – and I really like it. It’s completely and utterly raw, and this song is absolutely beautiful. Favorite lyric: “We’re just swimming round in our glasses / And talking out of our asses / Like we’re all gonna make it (yeah, yeah)“. So! Grown! Up! 10/10.

When I started the college application process, I brought out a map and drew three lines. One was above North Carolina – I was not going anywhere cold. I just can’t do New England winters anymore. The second line was below North Carolina – I’m not a Southern girl. Sweet tea, Jack Rogers and Lilly Pulitzer dresses do not excite me. The third line was right along the border of California – because California is everything. I’ve now been in California for three months, I’ve survived the unbearable heat, and now the cold is hitting. It has been around 65º for the past few days. If I were still in New York, I would undoubtedly be wearing shorts. Or a tank top. Or maybe even both. But since I’ve been here for three months, at 65º, I had to go out and buy a sweater.

There was a MINKPINK/Project Social T/Obey sample sale on campus (another great thing about California and Los Angeles!!!!) and it was freezing. This red, incredibly soft sweater was exactly what I needed. I also went a little wild and bought this skirt, which is just fueling my leather mini skirt obsession, which all started with the famous rose gold number. I find it insane that I have adjusted to the weather so quickly. It reached a frigid 56º the other night and I broke out my sweatpants, sweatshirt, and fuzzy socks. And I slept under all of my covers!! It’s like the apocalypse!! I came to USC in part because of the beautiful weather year-round, however I’ve been frozen for the past few days. It’s insane, and I miss all of my big sweaters that are currently hanging in my closet at home. I’ll see you at Christmastime, sweaters. You are greatly missed. xoxo.

In honor of a big event happening next Friday (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), this is a big ‘ole throwback to fetus One Direction, when Zayn was still in the band and Harry was still considered a “weak” singer – “Truly, Madly, Deeply“, quite possibly one of the most underrated One Direction songs in the history of One Direction songs.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Hilton Head, South Carolina

All good things must come to an end: a quote thrown around to make someone feel better about a bad/sad situation. A good thing: something good ie. spring break or One Direction.

This week has been filled with great tragedy. Not only did I fly home from vacation to a fresh snow-covered New York last weekend, but yesterday One Direction announced that Zayn Malik has left the band. As a die-hard fan since 2011, I did not take this news lightly. I never wanted to think about the band breaking up because I didn’t believe that it would ever happen. Yes, I know, they’re not breaking up, but to me, One Direction has five members, not four. Hearing about Zayn’s departure from the band surprised me but his reason for leaving did not. Zayn was clear; “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight“. The band has not had a proper break in over five years. They’ve been recording and touring and appearing on television programs and promoting products simultaneously and non-stop since 2010. So I hereby declare, as a fan of One Direction and a lover of Zayn Malik, regardless of how upset I am about Zayn’s departure from the band, I support Zayn and his choice to take care of himself and take a well deserved break. While I wish it did not have to come down to this, I wish Zayn the best and I support his decision 100%.

On the other hand, I do not support the end of spring break. My one week in Hilton Head was heavenly (even if I did get sunburned) and this week at home has been great, too. It’s unbelievably difficult for me to retire my sun dresses to my closet after a warm week on the beach and I can’t wait until the weather warms up in New York. I guess it is true that all good things must come to an end…

playlist of the day: for all of you folks recovering from Zayn’s decision, I think this should help.

Peace n Blessings

Last Minute Gift Ideas For Fangirls

Still stuck with what to give to your friends, children, siblings, etc. for the holidays? With only eight days until Christmas, it’s a stressful and exciting time. I realize that not everyone is a die-hard music fan and that everyone has a different taste in music, but I have rounded up the best gifts for some of the fangirls and fanboys in your life. Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 8.35.43 PM Perhaps the most talked about artist of the year, Taylor Swift is bound to be an inspiration for someone close to you. Here are some gift ideas that recipients will not shake off:

  1. Concert tickets // The 1989 World Tour — Taylor just announced a tour, with special guest Vance Joy, and tickets are almost gone. To find out when she’ll be near you, check THIS out.
  1. 1989 — Sure, fangirls/fanboys have probably downloaded this album on iTunes already, there is nothing like owning a hard copy of a fantastic record.
  1. Merch — Taylor Swift has an immense collection of merchandise, from tees to tea to-go cups. This is great for gift givers, but be careful with what you buy: not everyone would appreciate a shirt with her face on it! This is one of my favorite tops.

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 8.35.52 PM Ed Sheeran, the ginger-haired guitar playing, singing/rapping/heart-melting British artist, is on almost everyone’s radar. Here are some gift ideas for the “Sheerios” out there:

  1. His book: Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey — Ed Sheeran just released his first book ever. Not only does Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey offer a first hand account of Ed Sheeran’s amazing success, but its illustrations are also done by Ed’s own childhood friend (and album cover artist)!
  1. Vinyls — Vinyl’s and record players are definitely becoming mainstream again. Even if you don’t own a record player yourself (like me), it is cool to hang on your wall or just look at! (here, “TOL” here)

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 8.35.30 PM Ah, 5 Seconds of Summer. A band met with mixed reviews (INSERT TWEET ABOUT WORST BAND). Maybe (definitely) my fangirl is showing in this post, but I am totally on board with the 5SOS boys and music. Here are some gift ideas for the 5SOS fam:

  1. LIVEsos — This album is different from anything I have ever heard. The collection of fourteen live songs is deemed an “at home concert experience”. Available HERE.
  1. Concert Tickets // Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour — Their tour was announced a whole year in advanced, but there are still a few tickets left for their North American tour this summer! Look HERE for tickets.
  1. Merch — It sure does cure a fan’s aching heart. I love that 5SOS has a mix of tees with art and tees their faces. (From left to right, 1. 2. 3.)

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 8.36.07 PM And last but certainly not least, One DirectionAs arguably one of the most successful boybands of the year, there is no doubt that you know someone remotely attached to the band in some way. Even if they just enjoy their new fantastic album FOUR, here are some gift ideas for One Direction fans and non-fans alike:

  1. Four — Seriously the boys’ best album yet. It’s vibe is definitely more grown up, which widens their audience immensely. Pick up your own copy HERE.
  1. Concert Tickets: On The Road Again Tour — Yes, another One Direction tour. Seriously, go. Even if you don’t like them. Find out when they’re near you HERE.
  1. Makeup by One Direction: Makeup by One Direction Kits and the Limited-Edition Beauty Collection — If you remember a while back, I reviewed the first round of Makeup by One Direction. I was pleasantly surprised the first time, and even more surprised the second time around. The Limited-Edition Beauty Collection (the tin featuring Liam on the front) is similar in essence to the first makeup tins, but with better, more pigmented colors. I am wearing a combination of “Tell Me A Lie” and “I Would” on my lids and a combination of “Loved You First” and “One Thing” on my lips. Also, the eyeliner in this set is the best eyeliner I’ve ever used. It glides on so easily and is definitely replacing my old eyeliners. On the other hand, the Makeup by One Direction Kits (nail polish, mascara and lip gloss) are quite different. The colors are brighter, more sparkly and less geared towards teenagers than their other products. I definitely recommend this for younger girls, though. While I cannot rock the Liquilights Glow Gloss for the life of me, I am positive younger fans would appreciate the Electro Glam Mascara and Rock Me Nail Kit. For more information on Makeup by One Direction, go HERE.

What would you give your fangirl/fanboys?

Night Changes

IMG_5180IMG_5186IMG_5172IMG_5168

(photography by Kathryn McSherry)

Does it ever drive you crazy, just how fast the night (the weather, the color of the leaves, and your favorite song) changes? If you’re confused, you obviously haven’t pre-ordered One Direction’s album Four that’s dropping tomorrow. If you’re not into the whole album buying thing, go pick up Night Changes, their most recent single (and currently number two on the charts) right now. The song has beach boys vibes and features strong instrumentals and harmonies, not to mention killer lyrics. The bubblegum pop boys in color coordinating outfits are gone. This album is more folky/rock/instrumental than One Direction has ever been before, and it is attracting all sorts of attention.

Speaking of changes, this whole fall changing to winter thing is all too much and all too early. Yes, I do love the red leaves of my neighbors’ tree, but having to layer up is not my cup of tea. On the other hand, my new leather jacket is surely helping me through the thirty degree afternoons. With my short hair I am still getting used to, this leather jacket adds an extra punch of edge. For now, I can handle the cold with just my jacket. I’m just glad it’s not snowing… yet.

Song of the Day: “Night Changes” – One Direction. Seriously. It’s fantastic.

Peace n Blessings

One Direction | Nashville, Tennessee

IMG_366410409017_708263065913506_2905167854727786768_nIMG_3840IMG_3799IMG_3886IMG_3947

Nashville, Tennessee

My life is about to (and already kind of has) become all about college. Last spring break was all about California college visits, my summer was about the essay and starting applications and last week was about Nashville. I visited a school in Nashville and it was possibly the shortest trip of my life, but it was just enough time to get a feel for the city. And what better way to get a feel for Music City than to attend a concert?

This was my fifth One Direction concert and my fourth time seeing 5 Seconds of Summer live. Absolutely absurd, I know, but these concerts have never disappointed. There is something indescribably magnetic about going to a One Direction concert. People dance in their seats, sing along to their favorite songs, meet up with old and new friends, and for some, attending a One Direction concert is a dream come true. While my dream has come true five times over, I still relish every single second of every concert. And let me tell you, there is nothing more exhilarating than being a part of a stadium of 60,000 fans singing (or should I say screaming) along to “Little Things”.

Here are my favorite songs from the concert-

“Disconnected” – 5 Seconds of Summer (a last minute add on to their set)

“Voodoo Doll” – 5 Seconds of Summer

“Better Than Words” – One Direction (quite possibly my favorite from the entire concert because of how much fun the boys had whilst singing it and the sick graphics on the screens of the set)

“Through The Dark” – One Direction

“Diana” – One Direction

“Half A Heart” – One Direction (even though it wasn’t actually sung at the concert, it is by far the best song on Midnight Memories and is worth mentioning)

Overall, the Nashville stop of the WWA tour definitely is up there on the charts of my favorite concerts. It was a lot of fun exploring Music City and going to a new venue for an amazing concert! To see what I wore and video clips from the concert, watch this!

Makeup by One Direction

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 7.00.22 PM

When I found out One Direction was coming out with a makeup line I laughed a little bit. These guys have done everything! Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a fan before they released anything across the Atlantic Ocean, but they’ve blown up so much it’s hard to think of them as my little secret anymore. But a makeup line? I did not expect much other than bright makeup embellished with as many 1D logos as space permits. But, being the die-hard fan that I am, I had to try it.

With three makeup sets being released, each one is named after and inspired by each of their albums, Up All Night, Take Me Home and Midnight Memories. I was pleasantly surprised when the first makeup set of the collection arrived at my doorstep. While the Up All Night makeup tin has a removable cover adorned with the boys’ faces, the inside of the tin is face and (basically) logo free. The set includes fun and bright pieces, mirroring the vibe of their first album, which has bubblegum pop and summery songs. There is a lively eye shadow palette, fun stencils to decorate the tin, blue chubby eyeliner, pink lipstick, bright lip-gloss, turquoise shiny nail polish and black mascara. The makeup is packaged nicely, too. There are subtle One Direction logos on each of the products, but from afar you cannot tell, which is nice for non-superfans and general makeup enthusiasts.

IMG_3524

While all of the packaging quickly earned an A from me, I did not expect much of the makeup itself until I tried it. The pigment of the eye shadow and the “Stand Up” eyeliner are surprisingly high quality, and there is a good variety of colors if blues are not your go-to shades (I stuck with the blush pink “More Than This”, the taupe “Gotta Be You” and the lightest shade of blue “Save You Tonight”). The “Little Black Dress” mascara is also unexpectedly high quality. It does not clump at all and it has officially replaced my Benefit mascara. I love the “Na Na Na” nail polish, too; it’s not too thick or thin and it has the perfect amount of shine.

I sported my Up All Night look to the One Direction Where We Are tour stop in Nashville! Stay tuned for a concert post and a get ready with me video!

1D Day

As you all know, One Direction has a very special place in my heart. They’ve basically effected every part of my life. In preparation for the 1D Day 7 hour livestream video that commenced yesterday, One Direction’s team was all a-buzz trying to find inspiring stories of the worlds’ biggest fans. When I saw a tweet asking me to send in “My 1D Story”, I could not resist. I recounted the 5 concerts I’ve been to, the crazy outfits I’ve worn and the amazing friends I’ve made all over an email. I knowing what would come out of that email, I was over the moon excited when I received an email from Colombia Records’ team asking me to come in to their headquarters for an interview. I could not resist. I brought two of my closest friends whom I met through One Direction, and we headed into the unknown. Reaching the 25th floor and opening the door to the Artists’ Lounge was exciting in itself. We felt no nerves, surprisingly, sitting in front of blaring lights and professional cameras as the three of us told the stories of our lives… literally. What has been a lifetime for each of us was recounted in 10 minutes. After we left the lounge, we were still full of questions. Was this going to be shown during 1D Day? What it going to be released separately? Would One Direction actually see this? And yesterday, all of our questions were answered.

1441208_573820252691122_840273673_n

3 million people around the world and our 5 boys watched each of us, and a bunch of other girls around the US,  share a part of our story. I want to say a big thank you to Jenna for picking my story, my friends for coming along with me, and One Direction for changing my life.

Watch me and other One Direction fans from around the US at 5:25:00!

Since I’ve shared a part of the Story of My Life with you, go take a listen to One Direction’s “Story of My Life”, a single of their third album Midnight Memories that is officially out tomorrow! Make sure you pre-order it, I can’t wait to listen!

Peace n Blessings,
